Treatments for Mia:
Mia was born on January 17, 2011 at Overtake Hospital in Bellevue. Today, she is a bright-eyed 2 year old, who loves being outside, watching “toonys” (cartoons), reading and coloring, and playing with anyone/everyone in her company. Mia is big for her age, very talkative, and most always smiling. She was however born with Port-wine stain (birth marks) across a substantial portion of her body. The port wine marks are a vascular anomaly consisting of superficial and deep dilated capillaries in the skin which produce a reddish to purplish discoloration of the skins surface. Put simply, Mia has reddish birth marks across much of her face/neck, back, and legs. Fortunately at this point, she does not face a high risk of any additional medical complications and the marks do not cause her any pain or discomfort.
Treatment of infants include a flash-lamp pumped dye laser process which has been very successful for Mia thus far. The procedure is most effective at younger ages.
From 6 months to present, Mia has been going to Seattle Children’s every 3 months to receive the dye laser treatment. The program which is done through Eastside Dermatology has only involved her face and neck (because of insurance/cost limitations) and our goal is to be able to continue doing the treatments on other areas of her body that are effected. While Mia could not be more beautiful in any way, with some assistance we could continue working with Eastside Dermatology. We believe this will accelerate the opportunity for Mia to lead a more enriched, normal life.
